January Speaker - Ms. Lauren Anderson

Ms. Anderson is a former prima ballerina from Houston ballet; she is now in charge of education and community outreach programs.

Ms. Martinez is a PhD candidate at the University of Oregon in entomology. She has researched how problems such as invasive species, natural disasters, and human actions can affect the ways plants and insects live and grow.

Ms. Bussan is a PhD candidate at Washington State University. Her work focuses on providing habitat and space for wildlife in human controlled lands.



10/1/21 Dr. Laurence Dumouchel

Dr. Dumouchel is a paleontologist at George Washington University. She specializes in paleoecology, human evolution, faunal analysis, Eastern Africa, and taphonomy. She is currently researching and reconstructing environmental conditions in which our ancestors evolved.

She will be talking to us about how she studies the way marine predators (crabs) change the behavior and even the bodies of their prey (oysters). This week's scientist is Mr. David Ledesma, a paleontologist from the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in amphibian and reptile fossils.

This week's scientist is Ms. Syriah Stevens, a sea turtle specialist based in Florida. She has worked in several locations around the state protecting, rescuing, and rehabilitating sea turtles. She also works to educate the public about these extraordinary animals.

This week we will meet Ms. Mayleen Cabral Ramirez from Oxford University. She studies disasters - hurricanes, drought, earthquakes, and floods to find ways humans can adjust their behavior to keep these events from doing so much harm.

This week our scientist is Irene Salinas Akhmadeeva, an environmental Scientist from Mexico who is studying Marine Sciences in Saudi Arabia. Her work focuses on coral restoration, fish movement, fishery studies and coral reef ecology.

We met Ms. Jolene Saldivar from the University of California at Riverside. She is an ecologist that studies the way butterflies interact with invasive plant species. In this meeting, Ms. Saldivar told us all about becoming a scientist.

In our follow-up meeting with Ms. Saldivar we learned about her research and the work she does with butterflies.
